The Peace Palace, worldwide icon of Peace and Justice, celebrates its centennial anniversary! Between August 28th and September 21st, the UN Day of Peace, a chain of special events take place. In het Peace Palace itself, in the city of The Hague, and worldwide through the Dutch embassies in several countries. Through these events, we want to emphasize our unwavering commitment to a better world in which conflicts are settled peacefully.
Highlights of the programme are the Ministerial conference on peaceful dispute resolution, chaired by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Frans Timmermans, and conference “Sustainable Peacebuilding in Conflict-Affected Settings", which will draw on lessons learnt from Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya. Both conferences will take place on August 28, during the official celebration. Other highlights of the programme are “Peace of Me”, a contemporary musical in which young adults tell their story on Peace and Justice. And the exhibition “(Un)limited” for which first-year students of the Royal Acadamy of The Hague and the Willem de Kooning Acadamy of Rotterdam design posters. On September 21st there is a festive closing of the centennial celebrations with the Peace Run, a unique, one-time, running event in The Hague, and the Peace One Day Celebration Concert, where several international artists will perform.
